participate in the blue flag programme

Blue Flag is an internationally recognised voluntary sustainability programme for beaches, marinas and tourism boats, operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

To receive and display the Blue Flag, participating sites and operators must demonstrate compliance with a comprehensive set of requirements covering environmental management, environmental education, safety, services, accessibility and, where applicable, bathing water quality. Compliance must be maintained throughout the award period.

Working through its international network of National Operators, FEE supports the consistent implementation of the Blue Flag programme across participating countries.

Why participate in Blue Flag?

Participation in Blue Flag provides a structured framework that helps beaches, marinas and tourism boat operators strengthen environmental management, environmental education, safety and visitor services.

Participation can also provide:

  • A framework for continuous improvement, encouraging participating sites and operators to maintain and develop their practices.

  • Connection to an international network, enabling the exchange of experience and good practices between participating organisations and destinations.

  • Clear communication of compliance, allowing awarded sites to communicate that they have demonstrated compliance with the applicable Blue Flag requirements.

  • A recognised framework for environmental management, supporting participating sites and operators in implementing and maintaining Blue Flag requirements.

  • International recognition and visibility through participation in a programme operating across countries worldwide.

  • Support for environmental education, helping sites engage visitors and local communities with coastal, marine and freshwater environments.
