Our Programme

Blue Flag is an international programme for beaches, marinas and tourism boats, operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) through a network of National Operators around the world.

The Programme is based on defined criteria covering areas including bathing water quality, environmental management, environmental education and information, waste and resource management, biodiversity, accessibility, safety and services. The applicable criteria vary according to whether the applicant is a beach, marina or tourism boat.

Applicants are evaluated against the applicable Blue Flag criteria through national and international procedures. Sites awarded the Blue Flag are required to maintain compliance with the applicable criteria throughout their designated Blue Flag season or award period and are subject to monitoring and control activities.

Through its criteria, environmental education activities and international network, Blue Flag provides a framework for environmental management, education and responsible practices at participating coastal and marine tourism sites.

Environmental education is at the heart of Blue Flag, connecting environmental requirements with information, participation and responsible action.

Important Note

When owners/operators of beaches, marinas and boats are awarded the right to display the Blue Flag, it is because they have complied with a number of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria at the time of the award. Following the award, the owners/operators accept full responsibility to ensure continued compliance with all of these criteria. While FEE may carry out checks of sites from time to time, neither FEE, nor any of its officers, members or jury members accept any responsibility to any person in the event of any non-compliance.
